A guide into storage issues in your home and how to solve them

We can all agree that the issue of storage is becoming some kind of a problem in our homes. Whether it is having an overcrowded garage, a cluttered kitchen cabinet, or your kids’ toys being around, space is becoming a big mess. In fact, recent statistics reveal that 54% of Americans feel overwhelmed with the clutter filling up their homes.

However, with storage problems come storage solutions. For example, a recent survey has shown that around 21% of Americans are currently using self-storage. The primary reason behind this is that people are complaining about not having enough space at home.

In this article, we’ll highlight some things that experts believe might be the solution to your home storage issues.

Overcrowded garage: How do we deal with it?

One of the biggest sources of clutter in the garage is unused sports items. Or maybe, the “just in case” pile. To sort this one out, you’ll first need to do some major cleaning and discard some of the items that you have not used in more than two years. You can then gather up the remaining items and organize them into various categories. Let’s say tools, sports, gardening, etc.

In case your garage cannot fit your cars and important tools, you can also add extra general storage. For instance, if you use a garage made of a shipping container, you can add a shipping container cover for extra space. This can be used to store bulk items, tires, and other equipment.

Closet space is overflowing

The closet can make you feel like you don’t have any kind of space in your bedroom. Clothes are everywhere and you can’t seem to get some good space for them.

In this case, you’ll have to go through all of your clothes and sort out the ones you and your family wear. If you find anything that does not fit or doesn’t match your style, then sell it or donate it. Space will come up right away.

For the remaining clothes, fold them so they stand vertically instead of stacking them. Experts suggest that this will save up more space and help you see the thing you want at first glance. We also suggest that you group your items according to their nature. For example, you can have different sections for t-shirts, jeans, socks, etc.

Toys are everywhere

Find organizational bins to store different toys. You can then label the bins in such a way that your kids can return them without your help. This actually kills two birds with one stone. Help your babies learn organization early on!

Additionally, take some time with your kids and help them get rid of some of their toys at least once or twice a year. They can either share with their friends or even donate. Whatever works best.

Why is storage increasingly becoming a big issue?

But sometimes you can’t help but wonder, why is storage really becoming a big issue?

You see, the world is changing, families are growing, and people’s habits are changing, but people’s houses are still the same size. For instance, people are getting bigger vehicles for their increasingly growing families, but the garage size remains the same. Actually, car manufacturers are making the vehicles way bigger than they were before. With that in mind, you’ll realize that the previously large spaces have become considerably small.

Again, the rise of online shopping has become a menace to home spaces. You see, Statista show that more than 3/4 of Americans shop online. But what does that really have to do with cluttered spaces? Now look at it this way:

  1. Frequent deliveries: With the growth of services like Amazon, packages are delivered more frequently. Well, homeowners might not have dedicated storage spaces yet, but the packages keep flooding in.
  2. Impulse buying: Since it is easy to get items and online shopping platforms keep suggesting products, impulse buying has gone up. More products mean less space. And again, more products mean more shipping boxes, which take up too much unnecessary space.

In conclusion

With people’s habits changing over time, storage can become a really big issue. However, you’d realize that some of these problems can be solved by just taking some time to organize yourself. If not, then have some extra space in your property to store the excess things. Storage should not be a menace.
