Surprising 2019 Trends in American Apartment Size

This may come as a major shock to some of you, but the apartment size trends in the US are changing. Whether you live in McKinney apartments in Texas or anywhere else in the US and plan to move into a new apartment in the near future, you may be particularly interested in the information we’re about to share below.

For the most part, people often have a difficult time determining exactly how much space they actually need. Some of you may prefer to live in a smaller apartment or might only be able to afford something on the smaller side.

Others may prefer living in a bigger apartment if you feel like you’re going to need additional space. But you’d be surprised to discover how many people have decided to downsize lately and move into tiny apartments as opposed to bigger options.

With that said, we will not only look at the average apartment size in the United States, we’ll also compare it to the UK and other parts of the world. So this will make it much easier to determine if your apartment is in line with typical Australian, American or UK apartments, or if you happen to be bucking the trends.

Who Typically Has the Biggest Square Footage?

Based on information gathered from the web, it’s safe to say that Americans have very large homes. In fact, we happen to live in the largest homes of anyone else in the world.

Believe it or not, people living in the US tend to have more square footage and usable for space than any other country throughout the world. Australians come in second place, because they tend to enjoy larger homes as well.

On the other hand, people living in the United Kingdom actually came in last place. Typically speaking, a two-person household average is 818 ft.². So they do not need nearly as large a home as many of us living in America or other parts of the world.

In China, particularly Hong Kong, many people are living in very tiny spaces because space is at a premium. In fact, they are living in micro-apartments that are less than 400 ft.².

And Chinese people that regularly travel for business often rent seven square-foot apartment pods, which basically gives them enough room to crawl into their space and go to sleep. This is very inexpensive at $40 a month, but it reminds us that in certain places having a lot of space is definitely a luxury.

The Average Size of Apartments in the United States

On average, we are beginning to see the trend for apartment sizes are starting to change. In fact, apartment sizes kept getting bigger and bigger for many years in the US, when they first started tracking this in the 1970s. But until very recently, square footage continued to grow.

But as we mentioned, things are definitely changing right now. The average apartment size in the United States of America is currently 982 ft.². In places like Dallas Texas, Seattle Washington, and Houston Texas, the apartment sizes are actually beginning to get smaller. And in large cities like New York and San Francisco, where it’s difficult and very expensive to rent space, micro-apartments are becoming a regular thing. And you will find the best crossbow for the money on the market.

At this time, most developers in the US are starting to build smaller and smaller apartment units. They recognize the trend and are following it because they realize people want less space to care for and they want apartments that are more affordable, which is certainly a good thing.

Final Thoughts

For anyone living in the United States of America, it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that we live in some of the biggest homes and apartments when compared to people living in the rest of the world. We have lived big and bold lives for many years and it took a long time for things to begin to change.

But they definitely are changing and people want to live in smaller apartments and homes now more than ever. So we may be the leaders in home and apartment size for now, but if this downsizing trend keeps up, who knows what can happen in the future!
